About Malta
Where is Malta?
Most of us know Malta as a sunny holiday destination. It is located about 100 km south of Sicily and is actually further south than some parts of Tunisia and Algeria. Malta’s strategic position in the middle of the Mediterranean has shaped Malta’s seven thousand year history and attracted many friendly and not so friendly visitors over the centuries. Nowadays most visitors arrive by plane on a package holiday but it is also possible to get there by car ferry from Italy or Tunisia or even on one of the many cruise ships that pause for a day or two in the Grand Harbour on their merry-go-round tours of the Mediterranean.
In May 2004, Malta joined the EU and took Luxembourg title of ‘smallest EU state’ by virtue of having about 76000 fewer inhabitants. Malta is also one of the ‘Schengen Area’ which means that visitors from 25 European countries (not including the UK or Ireland) can enter and leave without the usual passport checks.
