Where can I learn to speak Maltese?

OK. The obvious answer of course is……. in Malta, but I live in Germany! Although the local adult education classes offer some pretty unusual courses, Maltese as a foreign language is not one of them. I was rather hoping to find some resources on the web but so far I have not been very sucessful. Since the second world war, well over a hundred thousand Maltese people left the Island for a new life in the UK, Cananda, Australia and America. Many of those must have children who could use some eLearning.

I have come across a couple of ‘language exchange’ type of sites where people can look for partners to exchange e-mails and telephone calls with. Does anyone have any experience of these? I am really looking for something a bit more structured.

Europodians is an interesting site that offers lessons in a whole bunch of EU languages including Maltese. It appears to be just starting up because to date (March 2009) there is only one sample lesson available. Let’s see if it takes off.
